St. Peter’s by the Sea
A poem. "Saltwater tides pitching my tongue"
The ocean from the top of the cliffs is asphalt.
A definition: a paved mixture of dark pitch
with sand and gravel.
like the parking lot between the laundromat and St. Peter’s
where my friends and I play basketball at night.
The pavement blackens the ball
and rubs off on our palms as we dribble.
Putting my hands to my face —
The smell is what it is : bituminous.
Saltwater tides pitching my tongue,
I drink it now — this re-surface.
