An early airport drive
through lake country. Cottonwood
and loon-song over the smoking fields.
One Michigan poet told me:
“It’s hard to feel the sting
of beauty here.
We’ve plowed the same
straight-laced, unforgiving
furrows for too long.”
He must’ve gotten up
early, then. Seen wind cutting
brief wakes in the corn,
felt the soft loam of Leelanau,
Calhoun and Lenawee, those voweled
counties heavy on his tongue.

Lovely, like something out of A Sand County Almanac.
