The Enthusiast Radio series—exclusively for our paid subscribers—is back with Vol. 3, mixed up by our very own Seth Morgan. This week, it’s all about the kids. Heaven knows that 99.9% of children’s music is hostile to the mind and soul. So Seth offers this aspirational list in hopes of salving the wounds of sleepless nights and (hopefully) selfless parental days.
“If I made a playlist that honestly reflected my three-year-olds’ musical taste it would just be Cher’s “If I Could Turn Back Time” followed by “Single Ladies” twelve times. Instead, this is a playlist of songs I have enjoyed singing aloud to and with my daughters. It is anchored by selections from America’s sing-along leader-in-chief Pete Seeger, and family favorite John McCutcheon. Sprinkled throughout are songs more about children than for them, like Sweet Honey on the Rock’s gorgeous setting of Khalil Ghibran’s text On Children – which has already spared me a few therapy sessions with its remarkable ode to open-handedness in the face of all that we cannot control. I hope it adds to your repertoire. And if the last song doesn’t bring hopeful tears to your eyes then we do not inhabit the same emotional universe.”
